HISTORY BEFORE: Emily Clarke was born a little late to the family, her sister had already been 17 going on 18 when she was brought into this world. A life time seemed to have already been lived by the time Emily realized it. Her father had been injured on duty and stayed at home and spent a lot of time with Emily, hence she quickly became a Daddy's girl. She always wanted to please him whether it be bringing him a drink, or getting straight A's in school. She loved her dad and would do anything for him.
Emily's mother, Lauren, had already raised a teenage daughter and was ready for the second when the time came along, however, Emily was mild, she rarely felt angry towards her parents, aside from those few hormonal mood swings that no teenager can avoid. The two got along great, until Emily's sister, Max came out of the closet, her family called it a phase, and were upset when the figured out it wasn't. Emily was ashamed that they would act that way to their own daughter, she saw nothing wrong with it, and was so happy that her sister had found someone. Emily grew to resent her parents when they said Max couldn't talk to Emily any more. Emily already knew she liked boys- not that she had ever been with one, but didn't see how Max having a girlfriend would rub off on her.
Throughout high school she went through the run of the mill -trying to find her place among the ranks, and eventually did land with quite a few decent friends. If she had an older sister to guide her things might have gone smoother, but overall it all ended up okay. She was constantly getting high marks on exams and classes and seemed to be good at nearly everything she tried her hand at. When her parents beamed down at her with pride and joy she would use that time to try to talk to them about Max, that was when all the moods turned sour, they wouldn't hear of any of that.
This infuriated her and she held the grudge to this day. But she couldn't voice this outrage to her parents, she's not that aggressive, however she kept contact with her sister any way, she wanted to complete a semester at the college her parents had picked for her and then run off to go live with Max and Vivian and go to school where they lived. When she got to college she got busy though, she got a job at the library and puts books away in her free time to make some extra money she stashes the cash for her trip and to offer to help pay for rent. She dreams of going to a small community college and hang out with the two of them when she's not working or studying.
DURING APOCALYPSE: Emily was standing in line to get vaccinated, a flu had spread over the college, and every student was being forced to be vaccinated. She felt fine and hated getting shots so she was not a happy camper. She had finals to study for, and was tired of being the only one working on her group final project for her sociology class. Everyone else claimed to have a fever, and weren't feeling well. She bet they had a hang over, and didn't feel like having her scold them while she did 95% of the work.
As she was standing there, crossing her arms and rolling her eyes as the raspy voiced nurse shrieked, next the shivering person in front of Emily fell to the ground. Emily was pulled from her brooding and jumped back in surprise. The nurse came out and tried to help the student up, Emily watched as the student stared glossy eyed up. She was so still Emily knew she was dead. It churned her stomach. The nurse dismissed the vaccinations and an ambulance came and collected the body.
Emily went to bed that night and when she woke up the world was a different place. She had slept so soundly, that she wasn't awoken once by the chaos outside. The world had ended she decided as she awoke to the smell of smoke and fire, she climbed out of her dorm room window wondering where the fire sirens were, she heard lots of sirens when she got outside though. There was an empty police cruiser at the other end of campus, she was walking towards it when she saw some class mates, she jogged over to them, and called out an inquiry as to what was going on.
That was when those classmates came at her in a full on sprint. She could see something different about them, and took off in the other direction. This world was a different one, she just wanted to go home. She had forgotten her cell phone in the dorm, and so she tried a pay phone to call first her parents and then her sister, but neither call went through. She was alone. She was scared. She was on foot.
ROLEPLAY EXAMPLE:Diana walked back to the farmhouse alone, the peeling white paint and lack of care over the years gave it that “walk by it’s empty” feel. She stepped up the porch stairs, they creaked under her light weight. If she held the rail while walking up she was sure to get a palm full of splinters. She pushed the front door open- which lacked a dead bolt. She figured out here, in a town where everyone knew everyone, and neighbors were a mile apart, the thought of locking up the house when everyone went to sleep wasn’t ever brought to any one’s attention.
She remembered an evening she went to go sleep at her mother’s house. It must have been Christmas for that was the only time she ever really went home. She had forgotten to lock up her apartment and when she returned two days later, her home was ransacked, she called the police but they just shrugged off the petty crime. Probably thought her boyfriend got mad at her and she just didn’t want to admit it. She would have killed who ever did it. Everything nice she had ever worked for in her life was gone over the span of two days. She would have liked to have those things now, she would carry them with her. They reminded her of a time where she was happy, and when hard work paid off. Now hard work paid off with every breath you took. She was still getting used to that pay off.
She entered the house and first took in the silence. She was a cautious woman, one who lived this long because she didn’t trust anything- including her initial instincts. She lurked about a bit, seeing if any strays had found their way inside, and concluded everything was as she left it, and anything dead would have revealed itself immediately. Coast was clear, she raced upstairs, and climbed into the attic where she had been staking out.
Diana pulled out some plastic grocery bags that had snacks and bags of rice that just needed to be boiled, she brought it downstairs with her, but first she resealed the attic, that was her place, her safe place, the less people noticed it the safer it would remain. She went out to the well out back- in the city she had never even seen a well, but out here there were quite a few, and she hoisted up some water, it’s murky color made her nervous, which is why she never risked drinking from it, she would boil it and have some warm food for when the men returned. She had to laugh a little, she never thought she would be making food for a man… and a boy.
She was in the kitchen reading by the sunlight when she heard them approaching, well more of Justin talking fast and loud. She hoped off the counter, and walked back to the black cauldron that was hoisted over a small fire she had started that morning. The water was boiling, and the rice looked soft and strangely appetizing. She gave it a stir, and then walked to the front door to get a better look. Gun still tucked aside, and easily accessible. It was her nature, and the nature of this world. But what she saw was the two males coming up the drive with meat. Both alive and unscathed. She opened the door happily. Food was strenght, and energy, and with strength and energy they would survive longer, and live better. ”Well look at that,” she nodded approvingly. Justin’s grin beamed.
PLANS: Meet up with her sister, hoping to find a safe place.
