HISTORY BEFORE: Jerry is the only son of an American woman who was of British royalty descent and his father, who was Mexican and a medical doctor. When Jerry was three years old his mother killed in an automobile accident and was raised by his father, grandfather and various family members. He has many Aunts, Uncles and cousins on both side of the border. He has no memory of his mother.
When he was a young man he met a young Mexican girl who was the daughter of migrant workers. That was his first exposure to the hardships the workers who were treated unjustly at the hands of unscrupulous farm owners who overworked and unpaid the migrants. Jerry, despite the protests of his father, worked for a time as a migrant worker in order to understand what the life was really like.
Graduating from high school, Jerry attended college and earned a Bachelor Degree in education and began teaching English language to migrants in order to arm with with the knowledge of when they were being taken advantage of by others. He felt it was the best way to help them. Ever since then he has become an advocate for migrant workers standing up for their rights.
But the day they heard the radio broadcast warning about the release of a dangerous virus he had to interpret what was being said to the migrants. Looking at the small group of men who were preparing to start work in the onion fields, he began questioning them about their health. Everyone of them had someone who was seriously ill pr were ill themselves. That was the beginning of the nightmare.
Before the day was over every single worker collapsed and died, their dead bodies lined up on the edge of the field. That afternoon the dead migrant workers had somehow reanimated and attacked the other workers killing and eating them. The only thing Jerry could do was grab a machete and run for his life
DURING APOCALYPSE: When the apocalypse started all Jerry could initially do was run for his life. The only weapon he possessed was a machete. He very quickly learned that it took more than a machete to survive. Scrounging around empty store he found food, clothes and a gun. These were his tools of the trade, so to speak. In a back pack he carried extra food supplies, extra ammo and whatever he thought he'd need to survive, including several disposable, plastic rain ponchos, three changes of clothing and a jacket for when the weather turned cold. He wasn't sure where he was going but staying hidden, warm and fed were his three priorities at the moment.
ROLEPLAY EXAMPLE:A siren. He heard a siren. The sound was approaching getting louder and louder. His eyes fluttered open. He saw feet scurrying around. 'Where was the front windshield?' he wondered. 'Why was it shattered? Why was it upside-down? Why were there people running around in a panic? Where was he?'
Something wet ran down his face and puddled around his head. “Hold on, Buddy!” a man spoke to him. He blinked again trying to understand what was going on. Looking to his right he saw someone crumpled in the seat next to him. A woman. She was so beautiful. Vacant eyes peered out from red hair that covered her face. No, not red hair, dark hair. Dark hair stained with blood.
Slowly his memory began to return. He knew the woman with red and dark hair with empty eyes. She was his wife. The love of his life. “Amy?” he asked. There was no response. “AMY!!” he called out to her.
“Hold on there, Buddy. What's your name? Talk to me. Tell me your name,” the man was asking him.
Turning towards the voice a sharp pain shot through his head. “Hank. My name is Hank. What happened? What's wrong with my wife? What's wrong with Amy?”
No one would answer his question. It took several men to get him out of the vehicle. Lying on the gurney he was finally able to see it even if only for a moment. The car he had been had flipped over onto its roof. Another car sat close by, the owners standing off to the side talking to a policeman. Amy's body now laid lifeless on the asphalt covered by a white sheet. Try as he might he could not move off the gurney. The pain in his head so great he passed out.
Opening his eyes once again the first thing he saw was his mother's worried face. Tubes ran into and out of him pumping or drawing away various types of fluids. Bandages covered his shaven head protecting the three hundred stitches it took to bind his wounds. A few days later, when he was able to comprehend and deal with the pain, he found out what had happened. He had ran a red light and a car coming from the opposite way struck him, causing the vehicle to lurch and tumble four times before landing on its top. Amy had been killed immediately, her head crashing through the windshield breaking her neck. In her hand was the results of a pregnancy test. It was positive. They had been so thrilled at the prospect of becoming a father that his common sense seemed to have left momentarily and he took his eyes off the road momentarily.
He had not come out of it unscathed either. Being knocked around in the wildly spinning car something had sliced his skull open from the center, down the right side of his head and raked across his neck. Had it not been for the paramedics he too would have lost his life.
It took him the better part of a year before he healed completely and allowed his hair to grow to cover the scar. He'd lost more than his wife that day. He had a potential family and had lost his reason to live. Everywhere he looked he saw Amy, saw what he thought his child would have looked like in the local children. Cashing in his trust fund he left and settled in an area he knew nothing about in a country he had never visited before. Here he would start again and try to forget the pain of his past.
PLANS: He doubts he'll find many Spanish speaking people so he hopes to join up with a group of survivors. Jerry doesn't like being alone and feeling vulnerable and helpless. With a group there must be some sort of security.
