GENDER: Female
OCCUPATION: Sat in her parents' basement...
HOME REGION:Mid West

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Salem is a pale girl with naturally black hair that falls to the small of her back, and bright green eyes. She is skinny, almost as if malnourished. She had thin lips, and usually keeps a very emotionless expression.
All over, she is petite, though scarred. Her arms, sides, legs back are covered with scars. One scar is very prominent on her back. It runs from her left shoulder blade all the way and ends where her back meets her bottom. She also had tattoos. Self-drawn, but tattoos, indeed.
One is the chorus to her favorite song, Desperate Times by Killswitch Engage. It is tattooed on her left forearm in elegant cursive with blood that looks like it's dripping over her arm. The other is on the right side of her neck. It is the japanese symbol of strength. The last is on her right thigh. It is the name of her little sister, Emerald.
Salem usually dresses in all black, and her style is called 'gothic.' She is always wearing a necklace that Emerald gave to her on her fifteenth birthday. It's in the shape of the moon. A ribbon clamps in the back, and it's short, making the necklace the perfect choker. The crescent moon is colored black with bright purple swirls mixed in. If one looks closely enough, there are words written in dark purple down the entire necklace. They read, 'A time of darkness is when strength shall be developed. Until the day you break free, remain strong, and if not for you, then me.'
PERSONALITY: Salem is a rather reserved girl. She doesn't talk much, and when she does speak, it's a short, simple answer. She is also very fearful of things, but at the same time, she is curious about a lot of things. Even simple things. She's never really had a chance to explore the outside world, and that makes her a bit reclusive to the outdoors.
She believes heavily in the Wiccan religion, and is typically found praying to her Goddess. She doesn't take kindly to people bashing her religion. It's one of the few things that can really set her off. Once she's set off, Hell rises to Earth, as she'll say the nastiest things and may even throw a few hits, though she's quite weak, really.

HISTORY BEFORE: When Salem was born, it was almost like she was tossed to the side. Since she was born as a result of her mother getting raped, she was never really cared for. They'd feed her once a day, and probably change her less often than that. The only person that would bathe her was her older brother, Jax. When she was three, her mother became fed up with the site of her rape child, and made a room for her in the basement where Salem was told to stay put. She was beat severely if she disobeyed. The only time she was allowed to leave the basement was to shower or use the bathroom. Even then, that was only during the hours of night.
She was never enrolled in school, and neighbors never knew she existed. Her mother would always tell them that she only had two children. It was as if Salem were a figment of her own imagination. Once a day, she'd get the leftovers from supper, and they wouldn't even be brought down to her. She would have to climb the forty steps that led from the basement to the house to get them herself. She'd always have a very small glass of water waiting, and she'd take it down with vigor.
However, Emerald would always sneak her tiny snacks, and since her older sister had begun to dress in all black, she'd get her mother to buy her 'gothic' clothes, which she'd wear only a few times before giving them to Salem. When Salem was ten, she asked Emerald to get her a book on the Wiccan religion that she'd found out about when she snuck on the internet one night. Once she had the book, she began drawing the pentagrams everywhere, and practiced the religion until it became her only faith. The only thing that got her by each day.
By fifteen, Emerald was her only friend, since Jax had seemingly forgotten about her when she was moved to the basement. Salem didn't really know what the outside world looked like, and often times had her little sister explain it to her, though she still didn't quite understand what her sister meant sometimes. However, once her parents found out what Emerald had done to help her older sister, Emerald was locked away in her room, and Salem's mother burned everything she owned except for two sets of clothes.
Once Emerald was ungrounded, she snuck back into the basement, and gave Salem a black crescent moon necklace that had purple swirls inside, and words that read, 'A time of darkness is when strength shall be developed. Until the day you break free, remain strong, and if not for you, then me.' She wore the necklace every second of the day. Only taking it off to shower.
Finally, at seventeen, Emerald had managed to get another Wiccan book from Emerald, and even more clothes. She thanked her sister heavily, who was now thirteen. Each night, she'd read her sister a few pages from her favorite story book. Surprisingly, she couldn't read or write very well. Emerald was the one who'd taught her. However, Salem didn't know that her life was about to go from Hell to worse.
DURING APOCALYPSE: She wasn't sure what time it was. She'd never been sure. She could only assume by the sound of someone moving around the house. However, despite the many many hours that had passed, Salem didn't hear a single sound. How long had it been? Days? A week? She wasn't sure, but she was hungry, and wanted to get out of the basement. She climbed the steps and opened the door, and sunlight flooded through the house. She gasped and jumped back. She hadn't seen sunlight since she was three, and she didn't remember anything before the age of five. She carefully moved through the house, not sure what she'd do if her mother caught her. She was terrified, but hunger was taking over her.
When she saw no one was home, she went into the kitchen. She stared at everything. There were things she'd never seen before. She opened the door to a large object, and tried to remember what Emerald had taught her. It was cold inside, and food was wrapped in odd packages. "Refrigerator." She whispered to herself, grabbing a few items from the shelves, though she wasn't quite sure what they were. She even grabbed a few canned objects that had liquid in them, and strange looking object on the top. "Canned soda." She said to herself before making her way to the basement.
It had taken forever to figure out how to open one of the sodas, and the hissing sound startled her so badly that she'd screamed and dropped it, cradling her knees to her chest in fear. When she picked it up, she saw that it was harmless and began to drink it greedily. The soda burned her chest and throat, but the taste was mesmerizing. She'd never tasted a drink that was so... Sweet? Wasn't that what Emerald had said those candy bars were? She couldn't be sure, but she liked it. She even ate the food, though she wasn't quite sure what they were, really. All she recognized was the ham and cheese. But the brown substance in the plastic cup? She'd never seen it. However, once she tasted it, she recognized that it was chocolate.
A thump at the top of the stairs caused her to jump, and she quickly began to hide the things in case her mother came down. When she didn't, Salem thought it was Emerald. She waited for her sister, but her sister never came. She went to investigate, and instead found that a man with grey skin and a mangled body stood at the top of the stairs. Salem simply stared at him, and he wandered off. When she was sure he was gone, she left the basement. She saw Emerald in the living room. It looked like she was playing, or so Salem thought. However, her skin was the same dead grey, and Salem had begun to worry. "Emmy?" She asked gently, and her sister limped in a circle. Once Salem saw her sister's distorted face, she felt horror slip through her body, and she knew immediately that her sister was now dangerous.
However, even when Emerald began to chase her, she didn't have the heart to kill her. Instead, she ran and ran and ran. Everywhere, there were those people, all trying to kill her. Did they know she was a rape child? Did they hate her because of her religion? Did they hate her because she was running? She didn't know. To the best of her ability, she avoided anything that wasn't a building, since she wasn't sure what anything else was, and often times found herself holed up in a tree, with those people gathered at the bottom. She traveled during the cover of night, and crept her way into buildings as her means of escaping. Nothing made sense to her. People were eating people. Why? Was this the real world? Had her parents really been trying to protect her? If so, why had they treated her so badly? Salem didn't know, nor did she understand what was going on.
ROLEPLAY EXAMPLE:The world had been a darkening pool and no one had ever known. The virus had filtered through the outside in with no way of escape. There was never meant to be a way out. The few that had survived? Well, who knew what to call them? After all, there was no hope. There had been. Nor had there ever been luck. Yet, people had relied so heavily on things in life. Some still did. What they didn't know was that came with consequence of death and a second life you didn't even know you had.
Violet heard Lotto cross the room. He'd stopped behind her, and she was glad for that. Perhaps he wouldn't notice. He was asking her what she saw, and when Violet glanced at him from the corner of her eye, she could see him squinting into the darkness that lie ahead of them. Her eyes flicked back to the window, and she didn't respond. She simply stared. He would see there was nothing. Plus, if Violet spoke now, her voice was sure to crack and give her away. Then, Lotto's voice rang in Violet's ears and she could feel her heart begin to ache. Name... She whispered in her head. I still have a name... The tears began to flow now, but Violet didn't shake. She simply let the tears fall.
His voice came again, and Violet was almost shocked by his words though it didn't show. She looked down, folding her hands in front of her and spoke in a quiet voice. "It's not Rose..." She said. Then, she heard one of the beds squeak loudly and Blackjack's menacing snarl. She turned to look at her canine. His hair was bristling and his fangs showed white in the dark hotel room. "Shhh!" Violet hissed, and Blackjack's growls ended immediately, and his bottom fell slowly. He was edgy for a moment, then he finally relaxed. She looked at Lotto. "He thought you'd done something to upset me." She explained simply as she leaned forward to place her palms on the window sill.
Her gaze turned back to the city before she spoke again. "And that's not what has me so upset, Lotto. It's bigger than that." She said, keeping her eyes focused on the different contrast of the colored buildings against the black sky. There wasn't really much contrast of it. The buildings were almost cloaked with the dark, and sight was becoming impossible to the human eye. Ever since the world had been brutally destroyed, Violet hadn't seen the sun, and she was sure no one else had either. The stars and moon were invisible as well in the night. There wasn't a single form of light left, unless you had a flashlight. But, one day, you'd be out of batteries, and then what? You were screwed unless you had somewhere safe to stay.
It was actually a factor Hollywood had right. Actually, when you look back on it all, the most accurate depiction of a zombie apocalypse would have to be 28 Days Later. So, when reality got a check, it was clear that Hollywood was meant to warn the world of it's different paths of destruction. In the end, none of it had mattered. Hollywood had gotten it right. Those things that were only suppose to live in movies had always been alive in reality. It had just been waiting to be released on the world. Something so small, yet so deadly, and with no chance of escape for anyone. It had killed almost the entire superior race. It had excelled where even animals could not. It had evolved.
Violet looked at Lotto. "Well never, ever, see this world be rebuilt." She said sadly and looked back at the window. "What kind of a life is it when you have to run all the time?" She asked. Holy shit... She thought to herself. That was quick. Really, she hadn't expected the idea of suicide to come up so quickly. Then again, was it a suicide thought, or a thought of truth? Violet didn't know, and she didn't know what Lotto would think either, and something inside her tugged, and she knew then that the ladder was what it had been. Truth. Not a thought of suicide.
PLANS: Not sure. She just really needs guidance at this point.
