ROX
PLAYED BY : SHIN-HYE PARK
THE CHARACTER
FULL NAME: Roxanne Yoon
NICK NAMES: Rox, Roxy, Rock
PREFERRED NAME: Rox
AGE: Eighteen
GENDER: Female
OCCUPATION: College Student
HOME REGION: Southwest
PREFERRED WEAPONS:
Knife's
Rox was raised by a father who enjoyed hunting. She was too young to be given a gun, so he taught her how to use a knife. Her knowledge extends to where to stab to kill most animals, and skinning. She's fairly confident in knife throwing and can hold off many attackers with one knife. After the undead rose, her father showed her how to use it in combat. With her years of knife working experience, she adapted fairly quickly. She carries two eight inch hunting knives.
Hunting Skills
Once again, her father taught Rox a variety of skills for hunting prey. She knows how to walk quietly so she doesn't alarm animals, and Rox has adapted this to sneaking around the undead. She is a decent tracker as well, being able to track the undead for miles through blood spatters on the forest floor and unusual foot prints. These skills include fishing and the ability to make jerky as well.
Agility
Her small nimble body allows for quick movement and speed. She is incredibly fast, having been on her school's track team before the outbreak. However, no matter how fast she is, Rox has always been a sprinter. She can't last long distances.
Kevlar Combat
Her father being a policeman, Rox has combat gear made from Kevlar. The gear is made up of a double layered glove on her left hand, shoulder pads and a leg protector. Typically, she will allow the undead to bite into the Kevlar then stab them through their head with her hunting knife.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Rox is not impressive in appearance. Her nose is like a button and is round. It's not too big, but not too small either. Her cheeks are round and stick to her cheek bones. Her face is soft, with no sharp jagged features at all. Her cheeks always have a tint of pink on them as Rox is constantly running without rest. Her face always has patches of dirty on them, however there are never serious scratches or cuts. She obviously takes care of her skin, often washing it or keeping it from getting scratched. Her father told her that the less scratches she has the less chance she would get infected. Rox has taken this very seriously, often going to great lengths to keep her appearance in tact.
Her body is small and petite, barely breaching five feet. Rox's small hips and flat chest often give her the figure of a young boy, and her short hair and round face often don't assist in letting others know her true gender. Her hair is layered and very messy, having been cut with a knife by her father shortly after the undead arrived. It's cut just high enough to never be in the way of her vision, but constantly framing her face. Both her big brown eyes stare out from that frame. Both her eyes are shaded by long eyelashes that hand down, giving the impression of sleepiness rather often.
Rox's choice of clothing can be questioning at times. Despite her want to wear frivolous clothing, she often finds herself picking out boy's clothing to wear. She's constantly drowned in fabric to keep herself warm at night and provide protection. Rox is rarely seen not wearing hiking boots, and she constantly keeps a jacket and a long sleeved turtle neck on. At times she will switch between shorts and blue jeans, but most of the time she'll wear jeans. A very distinct aspect of her clothing is Kevlar. Rox has a Kevlar vest that covers her shoulders and chest, and one Kevlar glove that she uses to blocks attacks with her arm. Due to the close counter combat she excels in, she typically wears goggles over her eyes and a face mask over her mouth.
PERSONALITY:
Rox is very reliable. She has been since she was younger. Her father's busy job often meant she was alone in her home and had to do most of the maintenance alone. When her father started taking her hunting, she felt the happiest. He rarely showed her attention outside of hunting trips, and so she always loved them. She worked extremely hard to become a skilled hunter just so he'd take her out more. Rox strived to please him, and she did. This is a major aspect of her personality. She does things that she believes will please her father, even with him gone. His memory is enough to drive her to survive. Although, at times, she will find herself missing her father to the point of breaking down, typically when around older men.
For a girl her age, she is very intelligent and observant, especially when it comes to survival situations. Rox isn't afraid to throw others in front of her if it means she survives. Other people aren't really people to Rox. This stems from the bullying in her past. Other people to her are just people that will double cross her before she crosses them. If it means surviving, she would gladly throw away a dozen lives for her own. Rox is very selfish in this aspect, but she does not want to die. Her father died because she was careless. Rox refuses to let his death go in vain. She will ensure her survival no matter what. Of course, she does realize that she may occasionally need other people to survive. However, her attitude toward other people could be taken as a sign of a mental illness, as at times, she seems to find herself unable to understand things that would upset others. When other people cry because someone died, she finds herself standing in a dumbfounded manner. She was confessed to once as a child, but she didn't understand what they were saying.
Her blunt attitude is another point of interest. She's very loud and very harsh. If someone does something stupid, she will say it quickly without much explanation. She expects others to know what she means. Rox has horrible social skills, and does not understand not everyone thinks like she does. As far as she is concerned, other people are no different than the undead. Every survivor group she has joined since her father's death has made stupid mistakes and ended up dead. Rox is always the only one who is smart enough to leave when she realizes the danger. Her mind set is that if her father was brave enough to give his life, then other's should be too. When people show a tendency toward acting like a coward, she is prone to kicking or slapping them. Her mind seems to have been driven into a "survival" mode, where others are only there to be used as bait or fight with her. This alienation of others will most likely eventually drive her into a corner.
Rox is still an unexperienced youth despite her personality, and she is prone to making her own mistakes as well. However, she is quick to blame others and rarely takes fault for things she has caused. In a way, she is still very selfish and childish. Rox has a lot of growing up to do, but she thinks of herself as an adult. She refuses to cry, thinking it's not adult like, and hasn't cried in front of another person once since her father ran off after getting bitten. Rox's childishness is very clear when she encounters "girly girls", remembering the bullying from her school. She dislikes most other girls around her age, having mostly been bullied by them; she isn't too fond of men either, most of them reminding her of her father. Her rash, cold and stubborn personality often makes changing her mind impossible. Once she makes her mind up, she rarely waits long enough before acting upon it, so many wouldn't have the time to talk her out of it. Luckily, Rox seems to have the luck and talent to pull off most of her ideas. Of course, that luck is sure to run out soon enough.

HISTORY BEFORE:
Rox had a very unusual upbringing. Her parents had gotten divorced when she was three years old. She lived with her father while her mother moved to New York, New York. Her father raised her alone, and he had his own troublesome job. Working as a police officer was difficult, especially in an area well known for drug trafficking and illegal aliens. Rox's father often found himself having to leave her alone at night for emergency calls, and because of this Rox became very reliable. By the age of five she was making her own meals and walking home from school alone. She cleaned the house alone, and she rarely went out to play with other children. It was like she was a little adult. Although the reason for never playing with other children was due to her apparent strangeness to other children. South Texas had very few Asians, and Rox was almost like a sideshow to them.
She never acted like a child because her father was never around to treat her like one. Her father took notice of this and decided they needed to have some father and daughter time. His idea of a solution was hunting. He had always wanted a son to go hunting with, but why couldn't he do this with his daughter instead? She was pretty much a tomboy from a young age, and her father loved that. Rox wasn't afraid to grab a worm and put it on the hook, or to help her father skin a deer. She loved being outdoors and had a real talent for hunting. Soon enough her father was taking her on hunting trips with him all over Texas.
He loved to brag to his friends about his huntsmen daughter, especially when she could outrun and do a better job at hunting than most of his friend's sons. This really showed on trips they with his work buddies and their kids. Rox would constantly be the star of the trips, but soon enough, the sons refused to even go on trips if she would be there. They spread rumors throughout school that Rox was secretly a boy who ate worms, and well, children can be stupidly cruel. Worms were constantly found inside of Rox's school desk, and once someone even dumped dirt and worms in her hair
This continued well into middle school, where she tried to ignore it, but finally snapped. One day, Rox punched out Molly Garza, one of the main bullies. She was sent to the office and given a week of Out of School Suspension since Molly's nose ended up being broken. During that week, her father took Rox out on a hunting trip, deciding not to waste a week. He taught Rox how to shoot a gun that week, but he never left her alone with it. When she returned to school word had spread that she broke Molly's nose. Now, everyone really did think Rox was actually a boy. Whenever she went into the girl's restroom, the other students would laugh and say she was in the wrong room. When it was time for P.E. the girls would lock Rox out of the locker room until the coach had to come and open the door for her. Where ever she went, all she would get were snarky remarks and off handed comments. A few times, boys would stick pieces of paper that said "I have a dick" onto her back.
Rox became one of the school's outcasts. She sat alone during lunch and went directly home after school. In seventh grade, she finally found something she enjoyed at school, the track team. She was so fast no one could catch up to her. People often gawked as she ran, but the other girls on the team would laugh. They would say that the reason Rox ran faster than them was because she was really a man. Soon enough, Rox hated going to track practice too. The only real joy she felt in her tween life was when she was hunting with her dad in the quiet forest with no snarky girls around or stupid boys. In such a small town, Rox's outcast status was kept in tact until she graduated from high school and left the town to for college.
DURING APOCALYPSE:
She was in her dorm when the undead came. Rox had been skipping a class when she saw them. As she looked out the window of the third story dorm, she saw a figure walking through the parking lot of the school that was visible from the dorms. It was getting to the point where the last classes of the day were ending, so students walking to their cars were already filling the lot. The figure approached one of the students. The student tried to ignore the figure, but soon enough, the figure bit down into him. He screamed out as more figures descended into the parking lot. Soon the entire school was surrounded as students ran out of the buildings to see what was going on. As the bell of the school's clock tower rang, Rox of the strange figures came toward the school, attracted by the loud sound of the bell. Rox could hear moans coming from the first floor of the dorms. She quickly locked her door, covering her ears as she heard screams and people, her roommate as well, banging on the door of the room, begging to be let in. In all the madness she felt her phone vibrate. Upon answering, it revealed to be her father. She frantically told him where she was, and several minutes later, a barrage of gun fire filled the hall and her father was on the other side of the dorm door.
The two fled from the school. They jumped into her father's police car and drove to their home, less than an hour away. As they drove, Rox watched in terror as they sped past scenes of terror and destruction. Once there, her father told Rox to grab clothing and anything she could use to fight. He gave her ten minutes. When those minutes up and left, the two of them were in the car heading North. As they drove, Rox saw several undead and curled up in the front seat next to her father and cried. The back seat and trunk of the car was filled with gasoline, clothing, food and guns. Her father had heard the news of the undead before anyone else on his radio and had left work to prepare. He was smart, smart enough to abandon his position when he realized things were about to go to hell. He spoke softly as he drove, explaining that there were shelters against this thing in Houston, and as soon as they got there, then they would be safe. They took the back roads and kept off the main roads, sometimes, as they passed the highways, Rox could see the undead crawling around the cars, forever locked in traffic.
When they got to Houston the city was in chaos. There was no shelter in Houston. They fled, forced to leave behind their car, to Austin. The two of them crossed the woods with ease, fighting off the undead as they came. Her father had stolen Kevlar vests from the police station before leaving. He made Rox wear one with shoulder and back pads as well at all times. He even fashioned a glove out of some Kevlar. The glove was worn on his left arm. Whenever he saw an undead, he would attack with his left arm, allowing the undead to bite into the Kevlar while he stabbed a knife into it's head. When they got to Austin, they found similar chaos. The same held true of Dallas and Fort Worth. In Fort Worth, they got hold of information that there was a real shelter in New Orleans. Her father was desperate to get Rox somewhere safe, so, they left for New Orleans that morning.
New Orleans was a mistake. They were swarmed by a horde, and as they ran out of the city, dozens of the undead chased them through the swamps. Just when they thought they had lost them, a hand reached out from the swamp and clamped onto Rox's leg. She fell and an undead rose from the water. Her father tackled the undead, getting bitten on the neck in the process. As it bit down into her father, Rox screamed and stabbed the undead in the head. The last words her father said to her were to take the Kevlar glove and run. He told her that there would be safety in the nearest city for sure. That she had to go, her scream probably alarmed other undead. Then, he took off in the opposite direction, back toward New Orleans, screaming and thrashing about. Rox didn't take his words lightly, and she ran toward the nearest city, following her compass and clearing her teary vision.
After that, she constantly jumped from survivor group to survivor group, trying to survive for her father.
ROLEPLAY EXAMPLE:A sky filled with stars so brilliant once could make out the milky way illuminated the sky. The darkness of night was illuminated by the stars, allowing a little bit more visibility that usual. No birds could be heard in the trees, nor could bats. The crickets had fallen silent long ago, and even the mosquitos seemed to have fled. The silence of the night hung heavy in the air of the forest as a soft crunching could be heard. The noise of lips smacking together, slurping and snarling softly filled the night. A figure, shaded by the shadows of the forest, was looming over a red corpse. Whatever the corpse use to be, by now it had been picked at and eaten up to the point of disfigurement. It was impossible to tell what it was after that thing had mutilated it.
These observations were made by a second figure. This figure was much smaller than the one on the forest floor eating away. It was crouching in a tree just above the figure. Hands covered the figure's own mouth, trying to hide the sound of it's breathing. One wrong move and the figure on the forest floor would know it was being watched. After all, it was one of the ravenous undead, and the mysterious figure hiding in the tree was a young woman. Her hair was cut short in a sloppy fashion, as if with a knife, and both of her eyes were a dark brown, made almost black by the lightning of the forest. Terror filled her eyes as she stared down below, watching the undead eat the corpse of a mysterious creature.
Earlier that day she had climbed up the tree in hopes of catching sight of the nearest town, but instead, she found herself trapped in the tree by one of the undead that had wandered into the area. Unfortunately for her, she had left her back by the roots of the trees. Luckily, it was hidden well, so no animal nor the undead would be able to mistakenly find it. All she had to do was sit and wait for the undead to move. However.. the smell of whatever it was eating combined with the horrifying sounds made the girl feel woozy and ill. She swayed in the tree, feeling faint. Her food was in her bag as well, and the girl had already been trapped in the tree for a few hours. As she eyed the strap of her bag, her body suddenly shifted to the side. Unable to control herself, she found herself falling, only kept in the tree by her legs wrapped around the branch. Her body hung in front of the undead, who now noticed her. As it swung out, attempting to bite the young girl, she pulled herself up. Her heart was beating so quickly it felt as if it would jump out of her throat. The undead was below her now, snapping and snarling. It knew she was up in the tree now. Gulping, the girl pulled her lips up, leaning against the trunk. It was going to be a long night.
PLANS: She will most likely cause trouble for a group she's in, maybe find one person that'll be able to put up with her. Eventually, Rox will probably end up being abandoned because of her personality disorder and have to grow up. She'll probably have some breakdowns because of her father as well.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Her mother was one half Korean, being the fourth generation of her family to live in America, and her father was full Korean, his parents having moved to America before he was born. The reason for her name was because her mother's family had already adopted using English names, and her father enjoyed the sound of the name. Also, a fun drinking game would be to take a shot every time I use the word "undead" in this profile.ABOUT THE AUTHOR
