Cole's eyes returned to the ceiling as sleep began to overtake him. Keeping his mind off the outside world was difficult, nonetheless he had to allow himself to relax just for this time and get a much needed deep rest. "I hope not." He answered. Well the truthful answer was that yes, there was a lot of stuff out there, but as the challenge was with every night, he tried to not think about it.
Oh how fast things had happened. This morning he woke up with the intention of doing some highway exploring near Los Angeles hoping to hit a jackpot. Instead he met a girl and somehow ended back home. A pretty good day actually in the world of chaos and carnage. He just wished he had a plan, a future in front of them that he could prepare for. Living day to day was never something he was accustomed to, he was always thinking way in the future. But here, there was no future, and hardly any planning ahead. You couldn't make plans in this world since you really had no idea what the next day, or even hour, would bring. So what was his plan? Well, he would like to give an elegant answer to that, but frankly it was just to figure out how to live another day, and give this plague another opportunity to magically disappear.
His trance of both thoughts and sleepiness were put aside as Hannah spoke. Was she ever gracious, he heard that how many times today? Nevertheless, not like he was complaining. "No, thank you for running into me." He said after a thoughtful pause. "In this new Earth, you're the one bright light for me." He sighed and rolled over on his normal sleeping position. "Good night Hannah, best of dreams." He added with a little laugh knowing how violent their dreams could be tonight.

Hannah, for once in her young life, was caught off guard, her mouth opened to speak, but nothing came out. She furrowed her brows and reclined her head back onto to the pillow. Being lost for words was a strange feeling... it was so warm, and her heart raced softly. She closed her eyes and saw Cole's side profile as he drove for miles. They shared gatorades and chips, and watched the sun set. She didn't think of the grisly moments of their time together, just the laughter and and the joy he had brought to her... something she hadn't known for far to long.
Eventually her mind went blank and she woke when the sun was up. The room was warm and she gently peeled back the covers, she looked to beside her, expecting so see the same side profile she had dreamt about... but all she saw was straight through to the wall that the bed was against. Her mouth dried, he's in the bathroom... he's checking on a noise... he's getting breakfast? she doubted the latter, but one of the first few were it, bound to be it... he wasn't dead. SHe knew nothing could kill COle that easily... or so she liked to think, he wouldn't leave... would he? After what he has said to her. She brushed her hair out of her face as she swung her legs out of the bed and stood. She was weak. Hannah had slept solidly through the night, yet she was still so fatigue. Her body trembled as she tried too quickly to walk forward. She leaned against Cole's nightstand, and took a shaky breath. She had to find Cole. She had to know he was alright.
She crossed the room and opened the door... he had shut it behind him? Just so you could sleep, he's thoughtful, she reassured herself. But the twisting knot in her stomach tightened. She looked through the hall, down where the morning was entering through the bay window, she walked towards the light, "Cole," she called out softly. Her body was weak, but ready to tense if anything came towards her...

Cole didn't sleep as well as he expected to, whether that was from circumstances or the fact that his body just refused to relax, he wasn't sure. But instead of sleeping until 10 or 11 like he expected, he found himself wide awake before 7. He took a look at Hannah next to him, sound asleep, as far as he could tell. Well, it wouldn't do him much good to just lay there, he though. So he slowly slipped himself out of bed and subtly stretched out a little. He wish he could say he was refreshed, but he was still worn out. That's what this world did to you, it was a constant drain. He quietly made his way to the door and opened it, taking a peek outside to make sure there were no surprises. He took a final look at the figure that was still motionless in his room, how lucky he was that she was there, he was pretty certain she was unique these days. With a smile he gently shut the door and turned towards the kitchen. Tired or not, he was going to make the best freakin' dish ever for the two of them...whatever that was going to be.
He stumbled his way into the kitchen and opened the pantry, gazing over various stuff in there. Fortunately, it hadn't been ransacked, so he had some options. He figured it would probably be best to stick with what he knew. He got out a package of fettuccine, a jar of this pretty epic pasta sauce, and a few seasonings as well, including a bottle of tequila. He assumed there was no electricity to speak of, so he went out to the backyard and started that propane grill they had, boiling pasta on a grill may or may not work, but it was all he had. As he turned, he caught sight of those bodies they dragged out last night...well they weren't exactly just bodies. He shook his head and tore himself away from the sight.
He came back into the house just in time to hear his name, Hannah was up already? "Over here." He said sleepily and lazily stepped into the hallway where he heard the voice. She didn't look a whole lot better than him. "I dunno why we're up this early." He shook his head and turned back to the kitchen. "Hope you like pasta for breakfast." He said with a small laugh. Those words he said to her before he dozed off came back to his thoughts, did she remember them?

Hannah looked around eyes wide and searching as she waited for him to call back to her, or for silence to be enough of a response. This looked like a different place than what they had closed the door on last night… there was color every where, and sunlight. She still had that sick lingering feeling that the events from last night had tainted her with.
"Over here.” The voice that broke her train of thought and brought her back to the team she had formed just yesterday. Upon the sound reaching her ears, she was flushed with relief, but what followed was the need to fix her hair, quick. She caught her reflection in a picture frame and cringed at the reflection. No time. It was what she had to work with. She quickly ran her fingers through her hair, flipping it to the side, giving it that lifted appeal. She rubbed her eyes before thinking, and they began to puff in the irritation that a good rub caused. She quickly stood up straight before Cole came around the corner, ”Hope you like pasta for breakfast.”
”I do,” she laughed, he looked tired, and he turned back to where he had come from, she followed, holding her breath as she walked, she didn’t want to make any unnecessary noise, or be a nuisance, ”I thought it was only a New York thing,” she joked, the excess of Italian Immigrants lead to Italian restaurants on every corner. She watched him walk out to the patio and took a seat on the bar stool tucked under the counter, she watched him through the open sliding door.
”A man with many skills,” she observed as she watched him tend to what was going on out there. It was beyond her and that was all she knew about the process. She rested her chin on her palm, she wondered if he remembered what he had said last night. She wondered if it would come up again. Crazy how she could think like a school girl when the world around them was crumbling down.

"Good, cause that's the extent of my cooking skills." He comically grinned and went back outside to check up on his make-shift contraption that really wasn't working as well as he would've hoped. Nonetheless, the water in the pot eventually started to boil as the flames licked up against, it had been quite awhile since he done this, let alone by this method. As he worked, he wondered exactly what was on the other side of their backyard fence. The world beyond his property was still the same it was a couple days ago, that he couldn't forget.
He walked back in the house with what was remaining of the tequila he used for the sauce and grabbed a couple small glasses, setting one by Hannah. He sat on the bar stool next to her's and poured them both of a portion of the tequila. In his mind, everyone was a drinker in this society, regardless of any previous attitude towards alcohol. "You know, I gotta think that these things will die eventually. I mean nothing can live without food forever, right?" He said with a shrug. It was what he wanted to tell himself. "Who knows, maybe in a week or two everything will just...stop." He almost smiled at the thought and took a drink from his glass. Wouldn't that be the day...
Through the window, he checked on the grill to make sure nothing was going too terribly wrong, it looked good, so he stayed put for the time being. What was there to do today? Hide in the house? Raid the town? Either would be fine with him, to be honest. Although he did really want Hannah to get comfortable with guns, he couldn't imagine trying to function here without that skill. "Got any ideas for today?" He asked.

He came back inside, and Hannah found herself holding her breath as he passed beside her. What was she doing? This was Cole, they slammed into one another and when they got up they were friends, they were a team. They were surviving because they had each other's back. Don't complicate things... she warned herself, but only released her breath when he passed by. He returned with two glasses, and a bottle of tequila, she eyes the bottle recalling a lifetime ago when she had experimented with her youth. Oh what her mother would have thought. Didn't ever matter to Hannah though, she wouldn't have been able to impress the woman if she was Ms. America.
She took the glass, and lifted it to Cole before taking a sip, letting the liquid burn her throat on its way down. If that didn't remind you that you were alive- and awake- nothing would. She watched Cole as he spoke. His mind sure did contemplate everything, probably why he was still alive. She needed to think critically like him, she had always been the kind of girl that if it wasn't stated on the page- it wasn't important. Cole was showing her another side of survival. The future.
"Wouldn't that be something?" she mused as she took another sip, "All those people, flooding out of the cities, ending their own lives by being out in the open and among others- all they had to do was hide out in their basements, play board games, and eat canned food." She lowered her eyes, it was sad to think that panic would be what killed them, and panic for nothing. Stay inside- stay alive. The bad things will die after a little while. "That would probably be the best thing for us though," she tried to adjust her tone to a less morbid pitch. She looked back to the grill Cole had been cooking over, it smelled wonderful. The idea of eating something warm and actually appealing was something she hadn't imagined doing in quite sometime.
"Hm, a plan..." she set the glass down and crossed her legs on the barstool, "Are we planning to stay here awhile? If so, we may need to secure it up a bit... if we're leaving we should get some supplies..." she paused and then lowered her eyes, remembering her bag that sat next to Cole's bedroom door, the gun in there, loaded and ready to kill... ready to defend... ready to be used to its full potential.... "Whenever you think its a good time- I am ready to try my hand at shooting...?" the suggestion was left high in the air like a question. She even offered a small smile and light shrug. She didn't want to push it on Cole, his nerves were probably shot after everything that was happening and she felt guilty pushing this matter when it may not be the perfect time.

"I'm not sure even a basement would be safe." Cole said with a remorseful tone. Truth be known, it was hard to judge if there even was a right way and a wrong way to conduct yourself out here. There was no prediction of what could come at you next, and everything you did felt like a chance, mostly because it was. He really felt it was by chance that he was still there, so many times he could've recalled where if one thing wouldn't of went his way, he'd be finished. "Who could've seen this coming though? People panic when they don't know what else to do."
Her question was simple enough but also hard to answer, were they planning to stay here? To say Cole had mixed feelings about this place was an understatement. He was home, but it didn't carry a restful feeling with that disaster in his backyard. That being said, he had to do what was safest for them, though he wasn't exactly sure what that was. He walked out of the kitchen past Hannah and looked around out the living room window. It was calm, too calm, but calm. "Staying in a house too long may become a death trap eventually, especially in a community." He said somewhat indefinitely as he studied the outside. "I wish I could say what the best would be." He shook his head and turned back to the kitchen. He cast a glance at her when she mentioned shooting. They were on the same page with that. "Right, we'll do that then." He finished off his shot cup and was tempted to fill it back up again but knew that drinking to drown his problems was probably the worst thing he could do now. "There's a strip mall a few miles from here. It's pretty small so there shouldn't be too much activity. Might have some stuff there..." He thought aloud. "After that, we'll go target shooting." A small grin crossed his face as he thought about his definition of target shooting out here.
A few flames licked up against the pot on the grill, which reminded Cole that he had stuff cooking out there. He went outside and got both the sauce and pasta, which were both conveniently done, and brought them inside. "This used to be the best dish ever." He said with a bit of laugh. "Guess we'll find out if I can still cook." He playfully shrugged and mixed in the sauce.
