"I cook well enough for a good meal, I wouldn't say I'm a gourmet chef..." he said, reminding her that she was somewhat skilled in cooking with nearly nothing from all those years of living on ramen, and yet she thought she'd give the man a chance to prove himself. He might just be underestimating his own skill. She packed away all but the pudding - she still wanted pudding for dessert - and smiled at him. Generosity was a rare trait these days, one she couldn't discourage by insisting on sharing her own food.
"Salted deer? yum!" she grinned. She got up, watched the man begin to chop vegetables, and then began on another one of her unneeded rants about something no one truly needed to know; "did you know that the oldest natural mummy ever found, of whom I have a tattoo," she rolled up her sleeve to reveal the mummy outline on her forearm, "ate red deer meat about 8 hours before he died? he had eaten roots and fruits with it, indicative of him having much the same diet we do now.. especially considering that carrot you're adding being a root.." She trailed off, not awkwardly, as she was used to little response from her unnecessary ranting, hell, she'd be pleasantly surprised if there was any response.
She finally got to see the man's features. Completely unlike what she had imagined, she couldn't help but beam at him. He was younger than she'd thought. Much more handsome, too. But she kept that thought to herself. "You look much less Swampy than I thought... very Scooby Doo moment I'm having right now," she grinned, "but I thought I said I wanted to see a smile?" She really did want to see a smile, simply because she hadn't seen one on anyone's face but her own for a while, and with the pleasant surprise of him being much nicer-looking than she had thought that surely would only add to the experience. "How 'bout a joke to get you started? What's red and sits in a corner?" She continued to grin in anticipation. It was by far one of the lamest jokes she knew, and yet.. her sense of humor was infinitely lame, so she thought it to be one of her funniest. "A naughty strawberry."[/sub]

He could only shrug "Well lets hope this deer isn't the baby of he one he ate." he said with a small smile.
He listened to her, a sly compliment sliding out of her, he only shrugged again, and when she asked for a smile, he couldn't really muster one out right at the moment. He looked to her as she told the joke, snickering slightly, and producing a smile, he made sure she saw it so that he wouldn't have to do it again.
"That was cheesy." he said with a grin, letting the broth brew itself, as he found soup bowls and spoons for them to use. He set the table and looked outside, it seemed dark enough, so he lit another match, catching the oil lamp, and causing it to emit a gentle glow. He then took the soup bowls that he had, and poured them both full, due to the heat, the dear meat melted into small stingy chunks, which he found extremely well tasting, but he didn't know if she liked it. Once he sat down with his soup bowl, he looked to her, shrugging his shoulders, not sure of what to say.

Thyra audibly laughed when he spoke of the deer's baby. The idea, of course, was absurd, but none the less amusing. She wondered, all of a sudden, whether all deer could technically be considered that particular deer's descendent. That, of course, was absurd too, since the red deer didn't even live in North America. Of course, one might argue that all species were technically related, since everything had evolved from a single-celled organism nearly 3.8 billion years ago... but now her thoughts were becoming too abstract on the concept for even her to follow. So she found herself stopping her train of thought, and eagerly accepting his smile with one of her own. "That wasn't so hard, was it?" she chortled as she slipped to the counter and reached for the soup.
"Cheesy is what I do best," she said, sitting down with the steaming bowl of food in front of her. She licked her lips at the prospect of sitting down to a nice homemade meal, and dove her spoon into it. Before she ate it she looked at the increasingly awkward seeming man in front of her. "You realize that sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can't hurt me, right? it's ok to use them.."
Finally taking a bite, she closed her eyes and savoured the flavour. She hadn't had time to stop and eat all day, and not only was hot food appreciated for that reason, but for the fact that he had indeed underestimated his cooking skills. It was delicious. "I think I shall call you Master Chef Swampman from now on," she began, spooning in another mouthful before continuing.
"So, Master Chef Swampman... how'd this whole set up get started, anyway? if you are indeed the big cheese around here, I have to say, you've done an impressive job. How do you keep out raiders? How many people are there? Do you have facilities, a library, recycling station, information center?" She stopped to eat another spoonful of soup, then started right back up again, only to say "and don't think you can get away with one-word answers, mister.. I'm going to keep asking questions 'till you've reached my level of speech!"[/sub]

He admired her for her bravery with words, one day he would get to her level, and he would force himself, he was about to become one important man. He watched her savor the flavor, grinning to his new nickname "That doesn't sound as menacing....", spooning himself a nice bit of meat and grinding it down.
He swallowed some more soup, he wasn't really hungry, but he probably wouldn't sleep tonight, he had night duty, so it was lucky for her, she could sleep on his mattress. He looked to her with a brow raised, wondering when she would finish. He was going to answer with the general, no no no yes. But since she asked, he would give it his best shot. "It started when the airbourne virus was about, everyone was freaking out except for me, I was prepared of course, I don't know why I was, I guess I'm just paranoid like that." he paused, drinking the rest of his broth, standing up and beginning to put out the fire under the kettle, which was already beginning to smolder. "People just came to me for advice and help, and we moved together into here, and its been this way ever since." he paused again, walking over to sling his rifle onto his shoulder, taking his bowl as well when he walked by, and tossing it gently into the slightly operational sink.
He then turned to her, listing the things they had developed "We have security, and the raiders around these parts know to stay away from the tower, I take pot shots at them occasionally, keeps them on their toes." he grinned, leaning against a metal, rusting support beam. "In terms of facilities, we have bathrooms, a working pipeline, farms as you saw, a small collection of books, for the kids to learn." he paused, thinking "Im planning on installing a radio tower, and improve our electrical circuits." he smiled "We have power too, wind and manual, if you ever want to work out, just go downstairs to the stationary bikes, you give us some juice while keeping in shape."
He paused, nodding to her "I may have missed a few things, they keep adding new stuff, its impressive." he smiled, nodding to her as he looked out the window, watching the sun lick the last of its rays onto LA.

Thyra listened to the man's explanation of how this came to be. She smiled at his way of assuming he was paranoid. Thyra hadn't been prepared. She was caught off guard in the museum one evening. But in her home, she had had weapons, food, and a decent supply of ropes, flashlights, sewing kits, and other useful survival gear... it wasn't because she had ever been paranoid, or even prepared for a disaster - she just spent a lot of time needing those things for various reasons, the main of which was that she went camping by herself quite often. She had yet to meet anyone who would come with her, since her purpose had always been the search for the perfect tree to climb.. people didn't really understand that. Little did they know that one of those test trees had saved her life in the very first outbreak.
She listened uncharacteristically patiently to him speaking of the way it had begun, and what he had done. It was impressive, moreso than she had originally thought.. the man was taking responsibility for a lot of people, and apparently doing a good job of it. She knew it must be hard.. hell, taking care of one person was difficult enough. Taking care of kids.. well.. she couldn't begin to imagine. She felt herself developing somewhat of a soft spot for this guy.. she couldn't help it. Someone who had this much control, and a level head in a situation that threw everyone else into chaos was something she hadn't expected to find. The surprise was well received.
She finished her soup, glad to also have the man finally speaking more. She mimicked him and put her bowl in the sink, then followed him to the window. The sun going down only made the previous view even better. "You are pretty impressive, did you know?" she said, smiling toward the increasingly dark sky. She had never been someone who had a filter. She said whatever came to mind most of the time, and she wouldn't hesitate to express her admiration for someone so accomplished. Sure, she thought, he wasn't exactly a scientist, the ones she previously had the most respect for.. he might not even be very smart for all she knew. Then again, if he knew how to work out how to get power, he couldn't be a dummy either. "What do you think will happen to this place? what's your ultimate goal?" Her curiosity continued to be for academic reasons, still intent on studying this place, and yet she asked for another reason. His example had made her want to contribute somehow. Which was strange, as that had never been an urge she'd had before. Yet it felt nice. It was nice to feel like she might actually be useful somehow.
If someone were to analyze her, they would say that she strove to be with the people with the most power.. not politically, or monetarily, but the ones that had the most impact on the world. Before, it was scientists, the ones that shaped the world with technology and by answering burning questions.. people that would enhance the human race. Now? well.. now the Russian standing to her left was exactly that type of person. He, and the people in the complex below them, they were now the future. They impacted the world and the future more than anyone else she had seen. She didn't waste time thinking about why she was the way she was, and she didn't know this yet... but this was where she wanted to be.[/sub]

The leaders strive to understand those who follow him or her, and the followers strive to be just like the leader, its a vicious cycle, which he was getting the hang of. He was a mentor to most, he helped the women around the interior of the complex, setting up barricades and helping to clean up the place a bit for more survivors. He helped the men around by doing physical labor, heck he felt like a father to most of them. And the kids were just the same, if one couldn't sleep while he was on guard, he would tell them stories of how he hunted caribou in the Siberian forests, and how sleeping was just like the hunt, patience.
The reason for his calm behavior was his military training, only the a few adults around the campus knew, but he was born to kill, trained in the arts of special forces, and drilled to be calm in any situation, he was thrown into an ice pond, bound by the hands and feet, and yet managed to stay afloat, and was able to escape before hypothermia had its full effects. He had been through a lot, so surely he could handle humans that were twice as dumb as he was. Sure he wasn't the most scholarly of men, but his street smarts made up for it.
He felt her presence beside him, and he only grew a small smile, "Dont flatter me, Your just as pretty - I mean.... Impressive..." he mumbled out, realizing his mistake. He had a tendency after talking too long to actually start speaking what he was thinking. She really was something else, funny thing was about polar opposites, they seem to attract one another. You would think that he would long for someone just as quiet and level headed as he was, but he actually wanted someone to talk to without the fear of saying something he would regret. Sure he just had slipped when he talked, but that was her fault, she made him talk this much. But he didn't really hate her for it, he actually enjoyed it. Weird...
Once she asked about the goal of the colony, he thought for a moment. "Depends on the luck we get, if we continue like this, hopefully I plan to retake LA, and maybe start anew." He paused, taking her question a bit to himself "My ultimate goal is to see us bounce back, and establish a stronghold." He nodded, satisfied with his response, seeing the darkness settle in, and soon enough, it was only the oil lamp giving them the light they needed. He looked to her, "And you? Have you thought about what you might end up doing? Other than traveling?" he said with a small smile, walking over to the small bookshelf and taking his latest read, "War and Peace". He always had this around, but he only had just started it.

Thyra gave him a hearty smile at his little slip-up, one that showed nothing but appreciation, and yes, a little amusement. She normally would tease someone for ages for making such an obvious Freudian slip, but she would not with this one. She didn't want him to become embarrassed, or uncomfortable with having said that she was pretty.. she didn't want him to close back up. She liked it when he spoke, and she didn't want to do anything to make him stop. Instead, she just addressed the former part of the sentence and said, "I wouldn't flatter you if you didn't deserve it, Dmitry." That was quite true. Then again, Thyra had never been known to fib, lie, or say anything she didn't mean. Not just because she didn't really have a filter, but because she had never had any reason to do any of those things.
Her eyebrows raised at the expression of his ambitions. Retake LA? Ambitious, this one was. She wondered whether that was a good thing, or if it would eventually be detrimental... after all, if history taught us anything, it was that ambitious people fell a lot farther than those who weren't, and that their downfall was indeed ambition to begin with. But who was she to talk? she had always tried reaching for the top... sure, it was in fields far less important, and well.. less dangerous.. than what Dmitry was attempting, but should that stop him? would she shoot for such far-reaching a goal, if she had the drive or authority for doing it in the first place? she couldn't say, since she didn't have either the drive or authority.. she just wasn't that kind of person. She enjoyed that he was, though.. someone had to be. Still, she couldn't keep the look of incredulousness off her face. "Retake LA? All of it? Do you truly think that possible?"
She would not tell him that she, from a logical standpoint, could not see this happening. LA was huge, and as a piece of land, structurally? nearly indefensible. But then again, so would this area she was in appear to be, and somehow he'd still made it work. She strangely had faith in him.
Then came the tougher question. What was her plan? well.. she had plan to travel around, survive that way, always slightly hoping to leave behind whatever knowledge she had, so the future wouldn't be deprived of at least the amount of knowledge she had.. she wanted to impart the love of learning onto others, so they might learn for themselves. She never thought of settling down to do this... it just hadn't seemed feasible. She had thought that traveling and doing just that on the road would be good enough. But with this new world opening up in front of her... well.. she didn't know how to answer.
She was quiet for a while, which in and of itself was unheard of, and the confusion all of a sudden showing on her features was also completely uncharacteristic and quite frankly obvious. "... I.. " she started, not quite sure what to say. "Don't know?" she said finally, though it came out more as a question than an answer.
She was intensely frustrated with herself for not knowing this all of a sudden. It showed, as she spun around, marched to the Russian's mattress upon which she seated herself, looking quite discontent. She looked back to the Russian and gave a great big sigh of frustration. "Can we just talk about you some more? Or shrimp! did you know that there are over 128 species of shrimp?"[/sub]

She knew her way of words alot better than him. Although she was like this, his words were few, but his ideas were many. His mind always alive with ideas that he could do. He never got the chances to voice them, due to the real world situation. And now that the world was nothing more than a playground, he had his chance to rise to power, and actually whip something for himself.
Before this disaster, he was nothing to the world, just your average joe with a job as a gun instructor. The only real leadership experience he had was in the military. Everything else just fit into place. He was lucky to be here, if not he was sure he'd be walking with the dead right now.
"No, But its possible." he said with a small shrug "If not, its always good to reach higher than what you expect, It keeps you on your path."
He waited for her to respond to her question, but when she took her time, and was all not sure about it, he figured she didn't want to answer the question. He respected that, so he would just drop it there. She quickly changed the subject to shrimp, which caused him to raise a brow. He then added "You should get some sleep, You need to be well rested if your planning on heading out tomorrow."
He nodded, walking over to the sink and washing the objects they used to eat, trying to be as quiet as possible, as if he would make a sound, and hurt Thyra somehow.

Thyra was slightly amused by the determination of the man. His, what she thought was slightly delusional, theory that overreaching might somehow benefit them, was in her opinion a mistake. Then again, she had always been too much of a realist, and not much of a dreamer.. but then, who was she to speak? she hadn't accomplished, nor even thought to do any of the things Dmitry had. They simply had different outlooks on things, and she was very appreciative of his, even if she didn't consider it as logical as hers.. just more effective when it came to things like this. She wanted to know more, a curiosity about different people always sticking itself on her.. this difference in personality was fascinating on many different levels, she thought, always inquiring about everything she could when it came to getting to know new people. Instead, she just smiled at him. This wasn't the time for interrogation, even if it was friendly.
Thyra always slept in her clothes these days (then again, she couldn't think of someone remotely sane not doing the same) and at the suggestion that she sleep, the comfort she felt in a place like this nearly made her begin removing her shoes. She stopped herself as she was unzipping it, zipped it back up again, and stood instead. She, once again, was loathing herself for feeling so comfortable in a place. She was still in complete denial that she truly wanted to stay there.. but beginning to forget some measure of healthy paranoia was unthinkable for her, and the fact that she was doing just that was, to say the least, disappointing and disconcerting.
"And where would I do this sleeping?" she asked, already preparing to steal his bed, then possibly organizing a competition to see who might win the rights to steal his bed tonight.. but her childish whim was circumvented by her own actions which led her to walk to the man quietly doing the dishes, where she leaned in and gave him a small peck on the cheek. She pulled back and smiled at him, "thanks for dinner, Master Chef Swampman," she said, before rather abruptly spinning on her heel and making her way toward the can of pudding she had left on the table earlier. Before bed/after dinner snacktime, she had suddenly thought excitedly. She pulled the lid open, and pulled out a small folding spork from the front of her pack, then scooped into it, yawning quietly, then taking a bite, and offering the can up to the Russian. "Dessert?" she offered enthusiastically, always prepared to eat a whole can by herself simply because it was delicious, but much more inclined to sharing since she found overeating, especially in this situation, illogical and strange. "Pudding used to be boiled in bags, you know.." she started off again, certain Dmitry would soon fall into the category of people who were horribly annoyed with her endless fact-spewing, "and then later they would steam them instead.. then, of course, back then, pudding could refer to any type of dessert... and on occasion many things sausage-based.." Ok, she had to admit, that was a lame one. But she was getting tired, damnit![/sub]

He probably should abandon the dream of that, he was thinking too big, the fall of most leaders. He could settle for this simple life, a game of self sustainable value, and not having to move from place to place. He nodded to her smile, seeing a switch in the phase of the conversation. He moved away to finish the dishes, he heard the unzipping of something, but he figured it was nothing, as he heard it zip up again. For a moment he thought she was going to kill him, but why? Paranoia, got to love it.
When she asked where she would be sleeping, his modest side came out. "On the bed your next to of course?" which was his, but he didn't mind staying up all night and just counting the stars.
And when she thanked him for the dinner he only shrugged slightly, slightly surprised of the feeling of her lips on his barely trimmed cheek. It was in his culture to welcome everyone with a nice bear hug and a nice, warm atmosphere. He heard a pop of a tin can, and he raised a brow as he turned around, seeing the cap of pudding. He nodded softly, smiling to her cheek peck earlier "Why not, leave me a small pieace..."
Once he grabbed his book, and finished the dishes he slid into the seat where the pudding was, and he looked to her as she spoke of some random mumbo jumbo, it was nice to learn things, he didn't mind how random they were, it kept him on his toes.
"Interesting..." he smiled, looking to the bed that was only slightly made, "You need some rest, seriously.." he said with a nod, he was tired too, but he was staying her, she would probably migrate somewhere, there was no use doing that when you had no sleep.

Thyra, unaware of Dmitry's possibly distracting duties, was impressed with his generosity once again. She had been somewhat certain she would have to organize that little game for it, then again, she wouldn't have complained about that. It had been ages since she played a good game.. she missed board games most of all, she thought for a second sadly. Still, she wouldn't turn it down. She hadn't slept on a mattress for.. well.. since the outbreak happened. She had taken to sleeping in trees and on rooftops most of the time, never bothering to put down much for comfort, though one time she stayed in a museum preservation lab for 3 days, and ended up sleeping on a 17th century couch.. that had been the extent of her comfort so far. "Where are you going to sleep?" she asked, genuinely concerned about his comfort levels.
Thyra was incredibly curious about this facility, and was slightly hoping that her issues with sleeping (ever aware, she thought herself, she was woken by the smallest sound since the outbreak) had not entirely vanished, so she might during the night roam about and get a sense of the area. Thyra was generally very thorough, never settling in a spot until she had checked every inch of it. In this case, well... it was an entirely new case for her. She hadn't done just that because she had been nothing less than amazed by how they'd kept it together, and had felt no need to. Certainly, she would not check the complex for anything suspicious or dangerous.. she trusted that they wouldn't have been safe for this long if anything like that was around.. but to look around simply to satisfy her own curiosity? that was something she welcomed gladly. Alas, she supposed she could wait 'till the morning.
She handed him the last of the pudding, and plucked the book he had just taken out of his hands. Smiling endearingly to ward off any oncoming wrath for her book-stealing, she looked to him, flipped through a few of the pages, and said "look at you, all bookwormy and master cheffy! You simply are a little engine that can, aren't you?" Visually excited and impressed by the prospects of someone else reading, she flopped on the mattress beside her and opened the book, flipping through a few pages. "Which page are you on? come read to me." she smiled rather childishly at him, not thinking this request to be odd in the slightest.. she adored having people read to her, and especially characterful voices, which, let's face it, Dmitry had, with his wee accent and all.[/sub]

"There's a hammock up on the roof, I'll just lay there." He nodded as an acceptance to his own plan. She couldn't convince him to sleep on the bed, not when someone else was staying overnight. He was still hanging on to his Eastern European hospitality, he would welcome all with open arms, it would depend on how they responded to his help that would make him think twice about whether or not to put a bullet in their skull from a mile away as they leave.
He nodded to the handing of the pudding, carefully eating it, savoring the sweetness, he knew he wouldn't be able to taste something like this for awhile. He grinned when he set down the treat, walking over with the book and sitting beside her. He smiled, not really remembering his page, but he knew the book he was in. "Book eleven, chapter.... four...?" he flipped to the spot that had the small piece of wood for a bookmark.
He sighed, most kids asked him to read stories, because of his accent and his ability to voice the bad guy so well. He only shrugged. "Why not." he smiled softly, and shyly, finding his place, waiting for her to give the go ahead.

The mattress upon which Thyra was lying looked like it had seen better days, as all things did these days, though Thyra would never worry about something as a little dirt (in fact, the more mud, the better, in her opinion!), and even if she did, the mattress was not bad enough for her to have worried. It was more than wonderful that she finally was lying on something with at least a little amount of lumbar comfort and support. She couldn't think of a time she had been more comfortable. Then again, that could have something to do with the fact that the only thing she had to compare to a mattress over the last many weeks was tree branches, more or less.
So when she looked to Dmitry she did so with fondness. Being provided with not only safety, food, but comfort as well? well, it would make anyone adore the person who was providing such things. She couldn't make herself argue the fact that she thought it was unfair for her to take his bed and leave him sleeping outside. She wanted to argue, but several things were in her way; she did not want Dmitry to think her ungrateful by disputing his generosity, and more importantly, was so comfortable she had a hard time moving anything, let alone make it out of bed again to get to another. "Very well, Master chef Swampman," she said, finally overcoming her vocal laziness and agreeing to the plan, "but only if you promise to let me take you bowling some night.." She grinned. Of course it was a joke, to show that she was willing to pay him back for his kindness, but she frowned after saying that, wondering whether or not they could indeed get into a bowling alley. The thought was exciting.. any thoughts of semi-normality were, really. When he sat with the book in front of him, her smile widened greatly. It was almost like having books on tape all over again, she thought happily. "Now don't think you're boring me if I fall asleep," she said quickly before he began, "I once fell asleep during Star Wars. It is not a reflection on your entertainment value." She then rolled to her side, and looked to the man, smiled, closed her eyes, and listened. NOTE: you say that like you don't love it =D I figure you can wrap this one up in the next post. She will be fast asleep within a minute, probably, so you can just put that in there if necessary. I can start our planned raider thread, if you want me to? PM me! =D [/sub]
